Research Grants

Grants (6)

Society of Academic Urology

  • Title: Pilot evaluation of Mixed Reality (MR) technologies for feedback and guidance during Transrectal Ultrasound Biopsy simulation: a prospective, randomized comparative trial.
  • Summary:
    • The aims of this project is to compare remote feedback and training utilizing Mixed reality cloud based technology with instructor lead feedback during proficiency-based transrectal ultrasound biopsy simulation training.

NIH, NIBIB grant: R03EB027300-01A1

  • Title: Development and validation of high fidelity, patient specific, kidney phantoms for surgical rehearsals.
  • Summary: The aims of this project is to provide mechanical validation, anatomical verification and surgical accuracy of patient-specific simulation platforms for surgical rehearsals prior to complex kidney cancer operations.

Intuitive Surgical Training Research Simulator Loan Grant.

  • Title: Utilizing optimal challenge framework to optimize surgeon motor learning of robotic simulation training
  • Summary
    • To determine the most effective and efficient training approach for acquisition of robotic motor skills utilizing Optimal Challenge Point framework.
    • To compare simulation-based dynamic (personalized) task training verses fixed task selection for the acquisition of robotic motor skills.

American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons Grant

  • Title: Optimizing procedural surgical simulation training using an individualized deliberate practice approach
  • Summary:
    • The project looks to compare Individualized Deliberate Practice (IDP) simulation-training versus conventional repetitive simulation-training on the performance of trainees during robotic colectomy on patients. IDP involves repeated practice on complex tasks followed by immediate feedback on performance that allows individuals to refining weak aspects of their performance prior to task repetition. Customary simulation-training involves the repetitive practice of tasks while addressing performance deficiencies (feedback) but without remediation of these deficiencies until the next subsequent task repetition.

NIH, STTR grant: R41EB026358-01A1

  • Title: Development and Validation of a Physical Anatomic Model for Surgical Training Using 3D Printing Technology
  • Summary:
    • The major goal of this project is to compare the mechanical properties of a partial nephrectomy surgical simulation platform to resemble living tissue as well as surgically validate it as a surgical simulation platform at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Department of Urology.

Clinical and Translational Science Award: UL1 TR002001

  • Title: Patient-specific simulated procedure rehearsal for minimally invasive surgery
  • Summary:
    • Goal of this project is to evaluate patient-specific surgical simulation by permitting pre-operative rehearsals using patient-specific 3D models constructed in the Laboratory for Simulation-Based Translational Research at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s
