Transfusion Immunomodulation

Transfusion immunomodulation—transfusions alter the recipient’s immune system by down regulating cellular immunity, some innate immune functions, yet paradoxically contributing to inappropriate inflammation.  We are studying whether simple approaches such as restrictive transfusion thresholds, crystalloid washing and rejuvenation solutions can mitigate these effects and reduce complications such as nosocomial infections, thrombosis and organ failure.
