Core Clinical Curriculum

(Length of rotation typically 2 weeks)

  • Golisano Children’s Hospital (GCH) PHM – In addition to general pediatric inpatient medicine, involves care of patients with complex chronic diseases (one unit specifically cares for our children with medical complexity), care of patients with surgical problems (PHM co-manages with pediatric surgery subspecialty teams) and care of patients receiving palliative care. All units are considered teaching services, and teams consist of medical students, residents, APPs, fellows, and attending pediatric hospitalists.

First year fellows will complete a PHM rotation at the start of their fellowship to attain as much early patient exposure and education as possible and strengthen their skills, independence, and confidence in clinical care responsibilities. Fellows earn increased autonomy in clinical responsibility as training progresses, with ample supervision, guidance, and support.
  • Rochester General Hospital (RGH) PHM – In addition to general pediatric inpatient medicine (children 0-21 years of age), involves care of patients with surgical and gynecologic problems (co-manages with surgical/gynecology subspecialty teams). The team consists of medical students, residents, fellows, and attending pediatric hospitalists. Members of the pediatric hospital medicine service, including fellows, will respond to all rapid response calls and codes for patients less than 18 years of age, regardless of unit or service.
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) – Involves care of patients with complex chronic diseases, care of patients with surgical problems, performance of procedural sedation and care of patients receiving palliative care.
  • Newborn Nursery (NBN) – Involves care of newborn infants under the supervision of nursery hospitalists.  Fellows will build skills in delivering anticipatory guidance, evaluating and managing common neonatal diagnoses, ensuring safe transitions of care, and considering social determinants of health as they impact the mother-baby dyad.
