Wound Specialty Career
Healing of wounds is an old art of both medical and nursing sciences. However, until recent times care for non-healing, chronic wounds was limited to pain relief and simple dressings with limited focus on resolution and healing. Patients were left with debilitating and disfiguring ulcers and little hope of healing. When I started my nursing career over 30 years ago these patient were treated with home remedies such as Maalox and sugar or dry heat to desiccate these tissues. Much progress and promising new treatments have been developed to promote healing and improve the lives of these patients. This new road towards advanced sciences and improved outcomes has been very exciting and interesting to me as an advanced nurse practitioner and wound specialist. I can now use human skin grown in a lab or add growth factors and other advanced modalities to promote healing and hope for recovery. I greatly enjoy the ability to heal and vastly improve the lives of my patients. The satisfaction of seeing a painful non-healing wound transform in to precious new living tissues is very gratifying. Wound healing is indeed a healing art and a rewarding career.
