I am a board-certified and fellowship trained primary care sports medicine physician who specializes in treating active individuals with sports related acute and chronic overuse injuries. I have been in practice with the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Orthopaedics department since 2018. I manage a variety of musculoskeletal injuries, including shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and foot/ankle pathology, through non-surgical options. I also manage other sports related medical issues, including concussions. My practice includes the use of ultrasound to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal pathology. I specialize in ultrasound-guided injections, with a special interest in regenerative and orthobiologic injection treatments, including platelet rich plasma and bone marrow concentrate treatments.

I enjoy working with active individuals and athletes including some from our local high-school, collegiate, and professional teams.

I love golf and have a passion to help golfers perform to best of their ability with less pain. I am Level 1 Titleist Performance Institute certified and I'm currently working through level 2. Certification demonstrates my ability to improve function and identify keys to injury prevention. I have hopes of eventually establishing a “URMC golf clinic.”

Dr P Obourn is a caring person and once you get to know him a nice guy. The initial visit was not the best as he did not listen to my description of the Injury to Include my opinion and research. I ended up being correct in my diagnosis....he eventually came to the same diagnosis. I think he is a little defensive initially and does not have the best interpersonal skill initially. [...] BUT he did dramatically improve in terms of the "wall" he puts up. HOWEVER with all that being said, he's an alright dude and this is a complex case with multiple diseases (LYME and some degenerative knee issues) and I think he did much better as time went on.

Reviewed my chart and X-rays as I came into the room and had ultrasound to determine and accurately locate area for needle. Quickly diagnosed and provided pros/cons and assured I understood and asked permission to continue. Very personable yet professional and knowledgeable.

[...] I felt like they had very little time and everything had to move along quickly. The doctor spoke so fast I had to ask him to repeat some stuff. It was my first time there, my problem wasn't that severe but definitely affects my lifestyle. He did explain my knee problem and prescribed physical therapy. Kind of what I knew going in. Overall, it was an efficient appointment.

The provider include the following note in my chart notes but DID NOT have this discussion with me during the visit: "We discussed the role chronic comorbidities and obesity play in complicating this disease and that they can limit treatment options. The patient was advised that strict control of comorbidities and weight are vital for treating osteoarthritis." I understand that some prepared notes may be copied into chart notes, but there should be better review of the notes prior to posting them. The doctor is very knowledgeable about my condition - however, I did not feel that my experience with my condition was shown much concern with the impact on my daily life.

I felt that the doctor did not listen to my issues and pain level. He seemed to actually be angry that I was there to meet with him. I felt as if I was wasting him time and he wanted to hurry up with me to get to his next appointment. This kind of treatment makes me not want to see the doctor again and is a detriment to my improving. I certainly hope this was a one time incident because it really turned me off to going to a doctor which is not a good idea with all of my health conditions.

Dr. Obourn was very thoughtful and caring. He explained my option in detail with easy-to-understand descriptions. He seemed interested in my healing and recovery. I've never had a specialist doctor take such time and show enthusiasm and care about my recovery. I've already told many family members and friends if they need a D.O. That Dr. Obourn is terrific. I highly recommend him.
