Shalom Schlagman is a native Rochesterian. He graduated from Yeshiva University, with a BA in English Literature. He then completed a masters in Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University, with a focus on the history of Biblical interpretation, while simultaneously working toward rabbinic ordination and working as the executive director of the Upstate NY region of NCSY -- a Jewish youth synagogue based youth-group. Shalom went on to teach religious studies to 6th and 7th graders at SAR Academy in Riverdale, NY. Shalom returned to Rochester for medical school. He graduated from UR School of Medicine with honors in service and a pathway in Bioethics. He then completed combined residency in Internal Medicine-Pediatrics and a fellowship in adult and pediatric Hospice and Palliative Medicine, both at the University of Rochester. Shalom now spends time working in the divisions of hospital medicine, adult palliative care and pediatric palliative care as well as teaching and research in the department of Health Humanities and Bioethics. Shalom's scholarship interests include the study of the impact of language on diagnostic creativity and certainty, as well as the study of the mechanism of translation of personal experience and values into moral guideposts in the cosmopolitan hospital environment.
