Dr. Michael A. Valleriano is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, the Associate Vice Chair of Operations for the Southern Region, the Regional Director, and the Co-Director of Regional Perioperative Optimization. He currently oversees departmental services for the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (DAPM) at F.F. Thompson Hospital, Noyes Memorial Hospital, St. James Hospital, and Jones Memorial Hospital. He provides anesthesia care across U of R Rochester Medicine's clinical enterprise, supporting surgical subspecialties ranging from general, bariatric, colorectal, and vascular surgery to obstetric, neurosurgical, thoracic, and trauma anesthesiology. While still in the early stages of his career, Dr. Valleriano has shown a track record of leadership at every stage of his journey in both the clinical and academic realms.
His clinical practice emphasizes advanced airway management, complex vascular access, neuraxial anesthesia, and regional nerve block techniques. He achieved Top 10th Percentile distinction on both the Basic (2022) and Advanced (2024) Examinations of the American Board of Anesthesiology, and he is a member of multiple committees, with a passion for quality improvement and patient safety. As a member of the Difficult Airway Response Team (DART) at Strong Memorial Hospital, Dr. Valleriano serves as a consultant anesthesiologist in the management of complex pharyngeal/laryngeal anatomical disruption, airway access, and resuscitation.
Dr. Valleriano is deeply committed to medical education and mentorship. He is also passionate about recruiting other highly skilled physicians to serve in the region he has been lucky enough to call home for more than 20 years. He serves on U of R Rochester Medicine’s DAPM Clinical Competency Committee, Anesthesiology Residency Recruitment Committee, Departmental Recruitment Committee, and Program Evaluation and Evaluation Committee, and he regularly lectures and precepts anesthesiology residents. In 2016, he created the “lolnotacop” Anki flashcard deck, a widely disseminated free study platform used by thousands of medical students worldwide to prepare for their board exams; he later developed a companion deck used by anesthesiology residents preparing for anesthesiology board examinations, and both resources are still in use today. He also serves as both a formal and informal mentor for nursing staff, medical students, and residents throughout their training and career development.
A native of the Rochester area, Dr. Valleriano was born in Rochester and raised in Webster, NY. He studied biology at Case Western Reserve University, where he was a four-time UAA Academic All-American football player, before earning his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree summa cum laude from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine–Bradenton. He completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of Rochester, where he was elected by his peers to serve as Chief Resident and graduated with a Certificate for Outstanding Contributions to Education.
