Michael earned his B.S. in Biological Sciences from North Carolina State University, his M.P.H. in Global Health Policy from the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University, and his M.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his pediatrics residency at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital/University of Utah and his fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he served as Chief Fellow. After fellowship, Michael completed a T32 Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research at the University of Pittsburgh. His research there focused on using large healthcare datasets to study how nursing workforce turnover affected outcomes in the pediatric ICU during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also explored how data science can be used to identify and prevent critical deterioration in hospitalized children. Michael’s work centers on improving early recognition and timely intervention for kids at risk of clinical decline, with a focus on using data-driven tools to support care across the prehospital, acute care, and ICU settings.
