About Me

Dr. Heather Speck (she/her) is a native Texan and newest member of the Breastfeeding & Lactation Medicine division. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio, TX with research interests in breast cancer care and healthcare disparities. She then further pursued these interests by obtaining a master's in public health (MPH) from the University of Texas School of Public Health just before starting medical school. In 2022, she graduated from the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine, where she spent much of her extracurricular time focusing on Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, Street Medicine, and various women’s health initiatives. Given her wide variety of interests, it was only natural that she matched into Family Medicine for residency training.

Dr. Speck discovered her passion for lactation early in her residency after welcoming her own baby during her intern year. While at Middlesex Health, she completed the Pregnancy & Newborn Care (PNC) track, utilizing IABLE’s two-year Deep Dive program as a blueprint for her track curriculum. The structure of her four-year residency allowed her to become a certified Lactation Consultant and provide dedicated, lactation-focused visits within her continuity Family Medicine clinic.

Upon graduation from residency, not only was Dr. Speck both an IBCLC and a board-certified Family Medicine physician, but she was also board-eligible for the North American Board of Breastfeeding & Lactation Medicine (NABBLM) exam. Her dedication to caring for the breastfeeding dyad has led her to a faculty development fellowship here at the University of Rochester. Upon completion, she will be only the second physician—and the first osteopathic physician—in the world to graduate from a formal fellowship in this exciting new medical field
