I am most active clinically as a hospitalist, but I have a small primary care practice within the General Medicine Division's Strong Internal Medicine practice. This gives me a unique perspective on the importance of good communication and transition between the inpatient and outpatient settings. I remain passionate about general internal medicine as I believe the general approach truly acknowledges and respects the whole person in matters that affect patients' overall health and well-being, particularly in times of serious illness.Professional BackgroundI am originally from Maryland. I received my bachelor's degree from Duke University where I spent extracurricular time working on medical research and directing the International Association. I received my medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. My wife Carolyn and I couples-matched at Strong Memorial Hospital, where she completed her training in Pediatrics. After internal medicine residency, I joined the General Medicine faculty, practicing both primary care and an increasing amount of hospital based care. Over several years, I developed Strong's hospitalist service and served as the Hospital Medicine Division Chief for 10 years. Recognizing the value of formal business training, I recently obtained a Master of Science degree in medical management at the University of Rochester's Simon Business School and I am now working towards the MBA degree. Professional interests include optimizing the quality and efficiency of inpatient care, regional hospital medicine coordination (in particular, optimizing the inter-hospital transfer process), and inpatient medical education. I enjoy working with my general and specialty colleagues, medical students, medical residents, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. I am currently a Professor of Clinical Medicine. Publications include a chapter on general neurology for a medical student text, a chapter on peptic ulcer disease in Diagnostic Strategies for Common Medical Problems, and several manuscript co-authorships. I reviewed and edited a chapter on the general survey for the Bates physical diagnosis text. I am currently working with a group of colleagues to further develop and expand a twice monthly teleconference series for hospitalists in our region based on the Project ECHO® telementoring model. The goal of this program is to improve hospital care in our expanding regional hospital network. I currently live in Pittsford with my wife. Our 2 children are in college. When not working or attending business classes, I enjoy golf, trail running, travel, and spending time with family.CredentialsEducation1993MD | Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (USA)Post-doctoral Training & Residency07/01/1994 - 06/30/1996Residency in Internal Medicine at University of Rochester Medical Center07/01/1993 - 06/30/1994Internship in Internal Medicine at University of Rochester Medical CenterAwards2009 - PresentFellow in Hospital MedicineSponsor: Society of Hospital Medicine2001 - 2003Lawrence Kohn Senior Teaching Fellowship AwardSponsor: URMC Department of Medicine1996Lawrence E.
