Biography

Michelle Dugan received her Bachelor's degree in Nursing from the University of Rochester and her Masters' degree in Science of Nursing from Saint John Fisher.

She is licensed in New York State as a Family Nurse practitioner, is certified by American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and is board certified in Pain Management Nursing. She is a member of the The Nurse Practitioner Association of NYS, The American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and The American Pain Society.

Michelle's experience and background is diverse and specialized. It has has included prehospital care, emergency care, dialysis, vascular surgery and pain management.

Her current practice site is at the NeuroMedicine Pain Management Clinic. She is well versed and skilled in evaluating and treating the many pain syndromes seen at her clinic. She performs comprehensive new patient evaluations, follow up care, opioid management as appropriate, and expertise consultation for Neurogenic Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

She manages intrathecal pumps placed by her practice. These pumps are utilized for chronic pain syndromes, cancer pain, and or muscle spasm due to brain injury, spine injury, and or multiple sclerosis. Her practice also places and manages Spinal cord stimulators.

Her office practice has an on site procedure room where her patients may be referred for a number of pain procedures performed with fluoro or ultrasound guidance. The pain procedures include but are not limited to epidural steroid injection, selected joint injections, nerve blocks, and radio frequency ablation of medial branch nerves. Procedures are performed by her physician colleague Dr. Armando Villarreal.

Professional Background

Michelle Dugan received her Bachelor's degree in Nursing from the University of Rochester and her Masters' degree in Science of Nursing from Saint John Fisher.

She is licensed in New York State as a Family Nurse practitioner, is certified by American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and is board certified in Pain Management Nursing.

Michelle's background is diverse and specialized. As a registered nurse she worked and was involved in all aspects of emergency nursing, prehospital care, and flight nursing.

As a Nurse Practitioner she continued to practice per diem in the emergency department and maintain full-time practice status as a Nurse Practitioner in other areas. For 8 years, she cared for the dialysis patient population's chronic medical and psychosocial needs.

Due to her expertise in fistula management she was recruited by the vascular surgery group to promote their dialysis vascular access program. In addition to vascular access management, she provided clinic visits to a variety of vascular surgery patient specific entities to include arterial and venous diseases and syndromes. During her time with vascular surgery, she developed the neurogenic thoracic outlet clinic with Dr. Karl Illig.

Michelle translated her skills to the NeuroMedicine Pain Management clinic in 2011 where she still provides expertise consultation for Neurogenic Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. In addition she is well versed and skilled in many pain syndromes. She performs new patient evaluations, follow up care, and opioid management as appropriate. She consults on close to greater than 50 new patients a month.

Michelle is a member of the New York State Nurse Practitioner's Association, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. and the American Pain Society. She serves as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Rochester School of Nursing.

Her area of special interest and publications is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. She participates in Clinical Research with the departments Translational Pain Research Division at the University of Rochester.
