Biography

Dr. Benjamin Briggs primarily is interested in leveraging advanced molecular diagnostics in cases of difficult to diagnose infections. As such, he is interested in those infections which elude or challenge conventional diagnostics such as Coxiella, Bartonella, Non-tuberculous mycobacteria, and emerging infections where diagnostic reagents are limiting.

In addition to a focus on diagnostics, Dr. Briggs have a keen interest in teaching. Infectious complications manifest in every medical specialty. Therefore, good foundational frameworks in infectious disease concepts allows medical students, residents, and fellows to better care for their patients regardless of specialty or subspecialty training.

Research

Dr. Briggs research focuses on the development and study of novel approaches to sequencing-based diagnostics (also known as clinical metagenomics). With a focus on both the molecular and computational aspects of this emerging testing modality, he works to provide rapid and clinically actionable results with broad pathogen detection as well as genotypic results such as antimicrobial resistance predictions.

While the field of clinical metagenomics is in its infancy, the potential to improve clinical outcomes and epidemiological investigations is remarkable, making this work both exciting and important especially given recent epidemics and outbreaks where diagnostics are lacking.
