Biography

Dr. O'Donnell is an orthopedic surgeon fellowship trained in hand and upper extremity surgery. His interests include: 1. Peripheral nerve surgery including nerve repairs and nerve decompressions including endoscopic carpal tunnel release, 2. Upper extremity fractures from the clavicle down to the fingertips, 3. Shoulder, elbow, and wrist arthroscopy, 4. Elbow trauma including elbow fractures and contracture release, 5. Hand pathologies including tendon repairs and Dupuytren's contracture, 6. Shoulder replacement surgery, 7. Upper extremity tumors.

Dr. O'Donnell is focused on providing all patients with the highest level of care. He treats patients of all ages. He is especially interested in the restoration of upper extremity function so that patients can return to all of their activities and interests.

Dr. O'Donnell is currently seeing new patients at the Department of Orthopaedics’ Victor location and St. James Mercy in Hornell. He also operates at both facilities and is committed to keeping patient care local, to maximize the patient experience and minimize their travel.

Professional Background

Dr. O'Donnell was born and raised in Elmira, NY. He graduated as salutatorian of Elmira Free Academy. He attended Rochester Institute of Technology, where he majored in Biochemistry. He ran varsity cross country and track all 4 years of attendance, published a thesis in physical chemistry, and graduated with highest honors. Thereafter he attended New York University School of Medicine, and matched into orthopedic surgery residency at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. Following residency he completed fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY.

Dr. O'Donnell joined the University of Rochester Medical Center as an assistant professor of clinical orthopedics following his fellowship. His professional memberships include the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Research

Dr. O'Donnell is interested in hand, wrist, and elbow biomechanics. He is especially interested in distal radius fracture care, as well as elbow instability and elbow ligament reconstruction. During his fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center, he was a member of the Dr. Hausman research lab.
