He completed his fellowship at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. During the first year of his fellowship, Dr. O’Donnell refined his expertise in hand and upper extremity surgery, from endoscopic carpal tunnel release to finger replantation surgery. He is especially interested in common hand ailments such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, and Dupuytren’s contracture, as well as all upper extremity trauma. He regularly performs wide awake surgical techniques, such that patients do not require systemic sedation for hand surgery. Dr. O'Donnell is currently seeing new patients at the Department of Orthopaedics’ Victor location and St. James Mercy in Hornell. He also operates at both facilities and is committed to keeping patient care local, to maximize the patient experience and minimize their travel. He graduated as salutatorian of Elmira Free Academy. He attended Rochester Institute of Technology, where he majored in Biochemistry. He ran varsity cross country and track all four years of attendance, published a thesis in physical chemistry, and graduated with highest honors. Thereafter he attended New York University School of Medicine and matched into orthopaedic surgery residency at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. Following residency he completed fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY. Dr. O'Donnell joined the University of Rochester Medical Center as an assistant professor of clinical orthopaedics following his fellowship. His professional memberships include the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.ResearchDr. O'Donnell is interested in hand, wrist, and elbow biomechanics. He is especially interested in distal radius fracture care, as well as elbow instability and elbow ligament reconstruction.
