About Me

Professional Background

Dr. Justin Sysol is a native of Rochester, NY. He completed his undergraduate education at the University of Rochester, with a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Distinction in Research. He then moved to Washington, DC to pursue a post-baccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA...
Dr. Justin Sysol is a native of Rochester, NY. He completed his undergraduate education at the University of Rochester, with a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Distinction in Research. He then moved to Washington, DC to pursue a post-baccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) fellowship at the National Human Genome Research Institute of the NIH, where his research focused on the genetic and molecular biology of inherited metabolic disorders. He then joined the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at the University of Illinois at Chicago, earning both his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees there. His Ph.D. thesis research in the Departments of Pharmacology and Medicine focused on the discovery and characterization of potential novel therapeutic targets in pulmonary arterial hypertension. This research led to several peer-reviewed publications and has been awarded funding from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the NIH and the American Heart Association. Dr. Sysol then moved back to Rochester, NY to complete his Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He is currently a Hospitalist and Senior Instructor in Medicine in the Hospital Medicine Division, with academic interests including quality improvement/high value care, ultrasound and medical education. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family, reading and traveling.
