Dr. Mithra Gonzalez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is affiliated with Strong Memorial Hospital and has a secondary appointment in the Eastman Dental Institutes Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Gonzalez is a skilled surgeon committed to helping patients overcome debilitating conditions or recapture their self confidence. As an oculofacial specialist, he approaches each case understanding the important balance between preserving functional vision and achieving aesthetic goals. Dr. Gonzalez medically and surgically treats a variety of conditions related to orbital and facial trauma, disease and congenital anomalies.

Dr. Gonzalez graduated with honors from Virginia Commonwealth University and earned his medical degree at the University of Iowa where he was also a research assistant in the Department of Ophthalmology. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He continued his training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where he completed an American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery approved Fellowship. Dr. Gonzalez is board certified in ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Gonzalez allowed me to KEEP my Cochlear implant on during my entire surgical procedure this added to my level of confidence. According to the 3 manufacturers of cochlear implants this has NEVER happened before. I was treated as an ordinary HEARING patient. This meant the world to me. I was part of what was happening not just a lump of human being being operated on!!!

In reading the visit notes, I read that I stated that my peripheral vision was compromised. I NEVER stated this. I stated that I was aware of my left eye being different. [...] Dr. Gonzales came in and measured my eye/eyebrow areas. Asked if I had any questions. He stated that I would meet with the person to find out is [...] would cover this procedure. Only to find out that they were scheduling surgery. I was not ready to make that decision after no time to process . And remember, I waited over 3 hours for an appointment. I was there at 9:30 am and left close to 1pm! There was no written pamphlet about this surgery, as I did get when I had 2 other surgeries.

He quickly addressed the stint to the tear duct procedure but no discussion about the chance of him removing my eye due to prior history of malignant cancer in lower lid. Although the Provider took the time to answer all my questions, he appeared rushed. This was understandable given the apparent backup in the waiting room. The negative side of feeling the provider appearing rushed is that I left the office wondering if anything had been left out of his pre-op discussions for the sake of shortening my office visit. Doctor was great about explaining my particular issue and how to be rid of it, but didn't tell me possible risks associated with the minor procedure required....likely not many risks but would like to know these things prior to procedure date. Otherwise the doctor was fantastic and I'd gladly see him again!!
