Professional Background
Susan K. Hobbs MD, PhD is a Professor at URMC in the Department of Imaging Sciences.
Her undergraduate degree is in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. She completed her MD at Harvard Medical School. She received her PhD at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Her research focused on tumor angiogenesis. Subsequently, she had the opportunity to conduct post-doctoral research at the Lucas Center for Imaging at Stanford University School of Medicine. Her research focused on novel methods to investigate tumor protein biomarkers.
Dr. Hobbs completed her clinical training at St. Vincents Hospital-Manhattan (Transitional), Fairview-University of Minnesota (Diagnostic Radiology Residency), University of California-San Diego (Diagnostic Radiology Residency), and University of California-San Francisco (Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship). Following her training Dr. Hobbs began worked at Kaiser Permanente in the Diablo Service Area (Walnut Creek, CA). Prior to her appointment at URMC, she was Chief of CT imaging at Kaiser for the Diablo Service Area.
Dr. Hobbs joined the faculty at URMC in 2009 as an Assistant Professor and head of the newly created Cardiothoracic Imaging Section within the Department of Imaging Sciences. Under her direction, the volume of Cardiac MRI increased, the Lung Cancer Screening Program was introduced, and cardiothoracic imaging involvement in the URMC Valve Clinic with transcatheter valve implantation pre-procedural imaging started. She is a member of the LAM clinic, serving as the imaging consultant.
Dr. Hobbs specializes in the diagnostic imaging related to pulmonary diseases, oncologic processes in the thorax, cardiovascular disease, and parathyroid disease. Dr. Hobbs holds a special interest in resident education within the field of Radiology.
Dr. Hobbs is an active member in the Society of Thoracic Radiology, Society for Cardiovascular CT, North American Society of Cardiac imaging, RSNA, ARRS, ACR and AUR. She acts as a reviewer for the NIH and Radiology (a journal of RSNA).
