Jake Deines, MD is a pediatric intensivist at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and serves as Director of the URMC Pediatric Neurocritical Care Program. He practices as a general pediatric intensivist in the PICU, with a special interest in the care of children with acute neurologic illness.

Dr. Deines’ academic and research work focuses on improving outcomes for children with neurologic injury in critical care settings, including post–cardiac arrest care and traumatic brain injury. His work emphasizes translating evidence into practical, bedside-ready approaches to neuroprotective care.

Dr. Deines’ educational work focuses on the fourth year of medical school. He provides advising for final year medical students and oversees Pediatrics electives and the Acting Internship. His educational scholarship centers on optimizing the structure and impact of the fourth year for students pursuing careers in Pediatrics.

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Utah and graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine. He completed Pediatrics residency and chief residency training at the University of Florida (Orlando), a Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship at Duke University, and additional fellowship training in Pediatric Neurocritical Care at the University of Rochester.

Dr. Deines' research has focused on transcranial doppler ultrasound in the assessment of children with TBI, intracranial monitoring after brain injury, post-cardiac arrest care in children and optimizing the fourth year of medical school for students matching in Pediatrics.
He is the site investigator for the multicenter P-ICECAP trial studying optimal duration of targeted temperature management after pediatric cardiac arrest.
