Orthopaedics & Physical Performance

Dr. Susan McDowell is an orthopaedic oncologist specializing in treatment of musculoskeletal tumor--lumps and bumps that may or may not be cancerous in the bones, muscle and other soft tissues of the body. She treats people from the very young to the most mature, providing the compassion and understanding she feels each patient deserves, as well as including patients and their families at every stage of decision-making.

She also maintains her roots as a general orthopedist by performing partial and total joint replacement surgery, and she has a particular interest in limb-sparing surgery and preservation of function.

Dr. McDowell earned her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine, where she also completed her orthopedic surgery residency. Following residency, she moved from the United States Naval Reserve, in which she served for nine years, to active duty in the U.S. Navy as a general orthopedic surgeon in Bremerton, Washington. In her four years of service there, she became head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and achieved the rank of lieutenant commander. In 2015, she deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in support of the Resolute Support mission.

Following her military service, Dr. McDowell completed a fellowship in Orthopedic Oncology at the Mayo Clinic. She is board-certified in Orthopedic Surgery, and she is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of the Ivin's Society. Dr. McDowell is involved in research in the fields of orthopedic surgery and treatment for bone and soft tissue sarcoma. In addition to authoring numerous publications, she is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards and honors (see below).

Dr. McDowell performs humanitarian work in locations around the world. Each year, she travels to Thailand to the Barefoot Doctors School, where she trains health workers from Myanmar to provide care to people in their villages. In 2012, she went to West Bengal, India, to perform hand surgery, and in August 2017, she and her father assisted in building a church in Costa Rica.
