Dr. Madsen's research interests include the use ultrasound technology to better differentiate early rheumatic disease patients from the healthy normal population and the use of ultrasound as an outcome measure in clinical trials. Musculoskeletal Ultrasound findings have been shown to be biomarkers of disease activity in large vessel vasculitis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren’s syndrome and systemic sclerosis. Dr. Madsen is in the process of learning ultrasound guided synovial biopsy as part of several multicenter studies of psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
