Biography

Professional Background

Dr. Bohjanen joined the faculty at URMC in May of 2022 as the Chief of the Infectious Diseases Division in the Department of Medicine. He is a Professor in the Department of Medicine with joint appointments in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Department of Public Health Sciences. Dr. Bohjanen graduated from the University of Michigan with an MD, PhD degree in 1993. He then completed an internal medicine residency in 1997 and an infectious diseases fellowship in 2000, both at Duke University. Dr. Bohjanen was a faculty member at the University of Minnesota from 2000 until he joined URMC. At the University of Minnesota, Dr. Bohjanen served in leadership positions that included Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Translational Research, Program Director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program, and Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Research. Dr. Bohjanen is a physician-scientist with a clinical interest in HIV infection and the global AIDS epidemic, and his laboratory research is directed at understanding the regulation of gene expression in human diseases, including HIV infection and cancer. Over the past 19 years, he has developed a multidisciplinary collaborative international research program in Uganda that has involved clinical research focused on improving outcomes for patients with AIDS, as well as studies of disease pathogenesis in his laboratory using samples collected from patients in Uganda.
