Our team of preceptors, practicing as experts in their fields, is dedicated to providing an individualized residency experience based on your needs and interests. You will be joining a pediatric pharmacy team that plays an integral role on multidisciplinary heath care teams.
Golisano Children's Hospital is a fast-paced, high-acuity institution which provides a wide variety of learning experiences from which you will gain the knowledge and experience needed to be a highly skilled pediatric clinical pharmacist in the area of your choosing.

The PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency at UR Medicine Golisano Children’s Hospital, within Strong Memorial Hospital, is a 12-month, full-time curriculum that provides the essential elements needed to shape a successful pediatric pharmacy specialist. This intensive training involves activities in a wide variety of practice settings.
- Providing optimal medication therapy management for pediatric patients
- Rounding with multidisciplinary clinical teams including PICU, NICU, PCICU, hematology-oncology, general pediatrics, and pediatric infectious diseases
- Training in PALS and longitudinal participation in pediatric medical emergencies and resuscitation
- Numerous opportunities for educating patients and precepting and teaching students, residents, pharmacists, and other health care professionals as an integral part of the health care team
This PGY2 advanced pharmacy practice residency program in pediatrics is intended to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities of a qualified pharmacist that are necessary to be an expert clinical pharmacy practitioner. It is intended that a graduate of this program will be fully qualified to develop and sustain an independent and successful clinical pharmacy practice in any pediatric clinical setting.

Pharmacy Practice (Longitudinal)
Following completion of the orientation period, the PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Resident will be required to provide comprehensive pharmacy services as part of the pediatric pharmacy team every fourth weekend and on two assigned UR Medicine holidays.
Electives
Elective rotations are designed to customize the residency experience to the needs and desires of each resident. The resident will have eight to nine weeks of elective time.

- Pediatric Palliative Care
- Toxicology
Required rotations may be repeated as an elective. Additional opportunities are available based on resident interest.
Additional Opportunities and Research
Residents will also have opportunities to develop teaching skills by providing presentations to the pharmacy staff, as well as faculty, residents and students in other healthcare professions. Completion of a research project related to pediatric pharmacy is required and the results will be presented at the Pediatric Pharmacy Association (PPA) annual meeting.
Resident Well-Being
We place tremendous value on resident well-being and offer a longitudinal series which helps our residents achieve a better work-life balance. We strive to provide our residents with the skills they need to manage their stress and build resilience, not only for residency training, but for their professional careers.
Sessions incorporate guest speakers, various icebreaker activities, events such as preceptor-resident get-togethers, and lots of fun!

Life of a Resident
A typical PGY2 Pediatrics resident's day:
- 6:15 a.m. Get to the hospital to pre-round on patients
- 7:15 a.m. Head to the pediatric pharmacy satellite for morning huddle
- 7:30 a.m. Discuss patients with preceptor
- 8:30 a.m. Round on inpatient units and touch base with preceptor post-rounds
- 12:00 p.m. Lunch and hang-out with my co-residents in the office
- 1:00 p.m. Resident conference/meetings/patient care follow-up (varies depending on the day)
- 2:00 p.m. Topic discussion with preceptor
- 3:30 p.m. Sign out to evening pharmacist
- 4:00 p.m. Work on longitudinal assignments, then head home!

Purpose Statement
The PGY2 pediatric pharmacy residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. The PGY2 pediatric pharmacy residency provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete this PGY2 pediatric pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification in pediatric pharmacy.
The URMC PGY2 pediatric pharmacy residency program will train residents through diverse rotational and longitudinal experiences, clinical research, and teaching and precepting opportunities to become confident, independent clinicians and leaders in pediatric pharmacotherapy.
