Salary and Benefits

Through a unique arrangement with the New York State Office of Mental Health, Steinberg Forensic Fellows are compensated under the Resident Physician Salary Rate for New York State employees. For the 2011-2012 academic year, a licensed PGY-5 fellow base compensation is $87,852; for a PGY-6 fellow the base compensation is $94,256. Deferred compensation plans up to $15,000 of the base salary are available.

NYS Office of Mental Health

Some fellows have chosen to continue employment with the New York State Office of Mental Health, and for those that do, the fellowship year counts for seniority and retirement vestment purposes.

Vacation and Leave

Fellows can use up to 13 vacation days during the year. Traditionally, fellows have had the opportunity to take up to an additional week of educational leave. Fellows also get up to 12 holidays yearly, as per the New York State public employees calendar. Other types of leave (educational, family medical, emergency leave) are governed by the University of Rochester Department of Psychiatry leave policy.

Malpractice Insurance

Malpractice insurance is provided through New York State indemnification and Unity Health Systems insurance. This combination covers all fellowship-related activities.

Health and Disability Benefits

Medical benefits for the fellow and dependents are offered through a choice of health plans. These plans are widely considered excellent health care options. Dental and optical benefits are also provided. Short-term disability benefits are provided through University of Rochester.

There are moonlighting opportunities available in Rochester that the fellow may pursue. However, because of the excellent compensation package provided by the association with NYS Office of Mental Health, most recent fellows have chosen to focus their energies on maximizing their forensic experiences. If the fellow chooses to moonlight, these opportunities are governed by the URMC Department of Psychiatry moonlighting policy and ACGME work hours regulations.
