Dental services have been available at the Complex Care Center (CCC) since May 2016. Lead by Dr. Adela Planerova, we have a team of two dental assistants, Tracy Poupore and Maureen Steinbacher, and one dental hygienist, Deborah Mostyn. Our goal is to improve patient care for a population with low access and significant medical challenges. Patients do not have to be receiving medical care at the CCC in order to come for a dental appointment.
At the CCC the dental rooms are spacious, welcoming, and large enough to accommodate the patient as well as the patients’ parents, advocates, or guardians. Our staff is educated about the special needs of the patients, the best way to interact with them, and how a chronic condition can impact their oral health. The clinic is equipped with air glide dental chairs which are easily moved for easy access for the patients. We also have the latest technology available including a panoramic X-ray machine. The machine is able to capture a full mouth and jaw set of x-rays in a very short amount of time. For patients who may have anxiety with dental visits, our practice utilizes behavior guidance techniques like gradual exposure therapy. Use of nitrous oxide, often called “laughing gas” is one of the options used at the clinic to help patients feel more comfortable and relaxed during certain procedures. For patients who are unable to tolerate an oral exam, we will soon offer sedation services in the Operating Room at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Patient visits can be coordinated with multiple providers for example, a behavioral health specialist, a registered dietitian, and care managers. This interdisciplinary approach is unique and offers centralized care for the patients, opportunities to provide learning from one another, and optimization of the patients’ oral and overall health.
