Cystic Aspiration

What is Cystic Aspiration?

Cystic aspiration is a minimally-invasive procedure used to remove fluid from a cyst found in the breast tissue. Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can feel like lumps and may cause discomfort or worry.

Using a thin needle and imaging guidance, a specialist draws out the fluid to ease symptoms and help determine if further testing is needed.

Cystic aspirations are typically quick, safe, and effective, and they often provide immediate relief from pressure or pain caused by the cyst.

Who Needs a Breast Cyst Aspiration?

You may benefit from a breast cyst aspiration if:

  • You have a palpable lump in your breast that causes pain or tenderness
  • An imaging test (like a mammogram or breast ultrasound) shows a cyst that needs to be evaluated
  • A cyst continues to return or grow
  • Your doctor needs a fluid sample to rule out infection or cancer

Our Approach

At University of Rochester Medicine, our team of fellowship-trained breast imaging radiologists performs cystic aspirations using advanced ultrasound technology. We focus on precision, comfort, and peace of mind.

Your care doesn’t stop with the procedure—we provide fast, expert interpretation of results and connect you with breast specialists if further care is needed.

What Happens During a Breast Cyst Aspiration?

Here’s what to expect during this quick, in-office procedure:

  1. Ultrasound imaging is used to pinpoint the cyst.
  2. Your skin is cleaned and numbed with local anesthetic.
  3. A thin needle is gently inserted into the cyst to draw out fluid.
  4. The fluid may be sent to the lab for analysis if necessary.

You’ll be able to go home right after the procedure. Most patients feel relief almost immediately, especially if the cyst was causing pain or pressure.
