Transgender Care

Overview

Transgender is a medical term for people whose sense of their own gender does not match the gender that they were assigned at birth. Transgender care may include gender-affirming hormone therapy, pubertal blockade, mental health care, surgical services, vocal therapy, fertility services, and social services.

UR Medicine is one of the leaders in transgender care in the Rochester metropolitan area and our surrounding area. Our teams offer a multidisciplinary approach to transgender and gender-affirming care, coordinating services across several departments, including ENT, Adolescent Medicine, Urology, Gynecology, Endocrinology, Mental Health and Wellness and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Our team includes providers and surgeons who are nationally-recognized and board-certified, with fellowship training and years of experience and ongoing education. We provide gender-affirming care using the latest techniques while also ensuring that all patients, regardless of gender identity, are treated with respect.

Services

The following gender-affirming care is offered at these divisions and departments across UR Medicine:

Plastic Surgery

  • Gender-affirming top surgery: Top surgery is a procedure that removes or augments breast tissue, reshaping the chest to create a more feminine or masculine appearance.
    • Top surgery for chest feminization: Breast augmentation is a common approach for chest feminization. This procedure involves a surgeon inserting an implant into a pocket created behind the pectoral muscle or breast tissue.
    • Top surgery for chest masculinization: Common approaches include double incision mastectomy, keyhole top surgery, buttonhole top surgery, or gender affirming breast reconstruction. These procedures work to remove breast tissue and reshape or reposition nipples.
  • Gender-affirming facial surgery: May include a variety of procedures to create a more feminine or masculine face in addition to changes made by hormone replacement therapy.
    • Feminizing facial surgery: Brow lift, forehead and hairline modification, cheek reshaping, chin reshaping, jaw contouring, Adam’s apple reduction, nose reshaping, earlobe reduction, and lip augmentation/lip lifting.
    • Masculinizing facial surgery: Cheek augmentation, nose reshaping, chin reshaping, jaw augmentation, and forehead augmentation.

What Sets Us Apart?

Our nationally recognized providers offer the most advanced treatments as well as compassionate clinical care. At UR Medicine, we believe in fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion among our faculty and staff, students and trainees, as well as our patients and their families.

Because we are an academic medical center, many of our providers are also involved in research, contributing to a broader understanding of the role of transgender care in physical and mental health.

Our healthcare providers regularly travel to meet and learn from world experts in transgender care. We follow treatment guidelines set forth by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and the Endocrine Society.
