Eligibility and Admissions Requirements

Eligibility

Qualified candidates must have a DDS, DMD or equivalent degree (e.g. BDS), must be proficient in the English language and must submit all required application materials via the ADEA PASS application system (or the EIOH application system for Master's Program and Preceptorships).

Graduate Medical Education (GME) Residency Programs

Applicants to GME Dental Residency Programs must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Graduated from a dental school located in the U.S. or Canada that is fully approved by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC).
  • Successfully completed a 2-year program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) from a CODA-accredited dental school in the U.S.
  • Successfully completed an Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists after earning a dental degree outside of the U.S.

Candidates who do not qualify for GME Residency are welcome to apply to EIOH’s Postdoctoral Dental Training Programs for Foreign-Trained Dentists, which are tuition-based. See Tuition and Fees for details.

Admissions Requirements

It is expected that all application materials will be uploaded to your online application. Please note that the Eastman Institute for Oral Health reserves the right to verify the accuracy of all documents, including transcripts and test scores, and to require submission of official documentation at any point in the admissions review process.

Requirements for All Applicants

  1. ADEA PASS Application (or EIOH Application for Master's Program and Preceptorships)
  2. Letters of Recommendation (3)
  3. Curriculum Vitae/Resume
  4. Personal Statement
  5. Official Transcripts
  6. Copy of Dental School Diploma

Additional Requirements

  • GME Residency and Postdoctoral Dental Training Program applications require a non-refundable $195 Application Fee (this is separate from the ADEA PASS Application Fee).
  • Some programs require registration for the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program (MATCH). See How to Apply for details.
  • Applicants trained outside the U.S. and Canada must provide Official World Education Service (WES) ICAP course-by-course evaluation for transcripts issued by institutions outside the U.S. and Canada. Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) evaluations are not accepted.
  • Foreign-trained applicants who do not qualify for GME Residency are required to complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a score of 4.5 or higher (equivalent to 86+). Use school code 9487. TOEFL scores must be valid for 2 years. MyBest scores and Home Editions of TOEFL are not accepted.
  • GME Residency Applicants must provide their results from the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE). This is not required for the Postdoctoral Dental Training Programs for Foreign-Trained Dentists.
  • Orthodontics Program Applicants must take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General Test. Use school code 1002 - Eastman Institute for Oral Health. Please do not use code 2948. GRE Subject Tests are not required and do not replace the GRE General Test.
  • Other standardized tests such as the Advanced Dental Admissions Test (ADAT) and National Dental Board examinations are strongly recommended but not required.

Admissions Criteria

Due to the diverse needs of the individual programs, each training program establishes specific criteria for the selection of applicants. Generally, applicants are considered based on the following criteria: 

  • Completed Application
  • Grade Point Average
  • Class Standing/Rank
  • Transcript/Pattern of Academic Achievement
  • National Board Results
  • Experience, Training, and Specialty
  • Letters of Recommendations
  • Personal Interview
