Seven Clues Your College Student May Be Facing Challenges
Wondering how your child is adjusting to college life? If they’re away, it can be hard to tell. College can be exciting, but it can also feel isolating, overwhelming, and emotionally challenging. Keep an eye out for these signs:
- Reduced communication: Prolonged or sudden withdrawal may indicate stress or homesickness.
- Noticeable mood changes: Irritability, sadness, or heightened anxiety.
- Academic struggles: Mentions of falling behind or difficulty keeping up.
- Neglecting routines: Skipped meals, poor sleep, or declining self-care.
- Loss of interest: Less engagement with friends, activities, or hobbies.
- Risky behaviors: Excessive drinking, drug use, or unsafe choices.
- Expressions of hopelessness: Feeling overwhelmed, trapped, or unable to cope.
If you notice these, reach out with empathy, encourage campus or professional counseling, and maintain supportive communication. You can also consult with EAP for guidance and resources.
