Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is structured to provide comprehensive training across all three years of fellowship. Below is a high-level summary of each training year. Please refer to the full curriculum document for detailed rotations and objectives.

Year One: Foundations of Clinical Gastroenterology

  • Consult Service (7 months): Fellows provide inpatient consults and perform procedures.
  • Endoscopy Training (4.5 months): Dedicated protected time to develop basic endoscopic skills.
  • Motility Elective (2 weeks): Introductory exposure to motility studies.
  • Research Elective (2 weeks): Early preparation for second-year research projects.
  • Outpatient Clinics:
    • Fellows attend a half-day continuity clinic weekly, supervised by the same attending for 4–6 months, then rotate with another faculty member (general GI or IBD).
    • A long-term continuity clinic spans all 3 years, with fellows serving as primary care consultants for a patient panel.
  • End-of-Year Goal: Achieve competency in core endoscopic procedures.

Year Two: Research and Subspecialty Exposure

  • Research Rotation (3 months): Focused time for developing and executing a research project.
  • Transplant Hepatology Rotation (3 months): Intensive inpatient and outpatient experience in liver transplantation, including pre- and post-transplant management.
  • Additional Rotations: Includes nutrition, hereditary GI disorders, Endo-C, and therapeutic consults.
  • Conferences:
    • Attendance at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) is sponsored.
    • Additional conferences are supported if the fellow is presenting accepted research.
  • Clinical Responsibilities:
    • Weekly half-day preceptor clinics (hepatology, general GI, or IBD).
    • Continuation of long-term continuity clinic.
    • Reading capsule enteroscopies under faculty supervision.
  • Leadership Development: Fellows organize and lead all didactic and case conferences.

Year Three: Advanced Practice and Leadership

  • Supervisory Consult Role: Senior fellows provide clinical oversight and mentorship to first-year fellows and rotating trainees. Emphasis is placed on deeper clinical reasoning and literature-based learning.
  • Community Experience (2–3 months): Rotation at Highland Hospital to simulate a "pre-attending" role in a smaller, community-based setting.
  • Advanced Endoscopy and Electives:
    • Endoscopy rotations focus on advanced procedures and techniques.
    • Motility training is revisited for skill refinement.
    • Electives include:
      • Colorectal Surgery (2 weeks): In-depth exposure to anorectal disease in clinic, procedure suites, and operating rooms.
      • Additional Electives (up to 6 weeks): Chosen by the fellow in consultation with the Program Director.
  • Ongoing Responsibilities:
    • Weekly half-day clinic with a specialty attending (pancreaticobiliary or IBD).
    • Continuation of long-term continuity clinic.
    • Participation in all educational and call duties.

Advanced Procedures

Our program does not include a fourth-year advanced endoscopy fellowship. Training in ERCP and EUS is not part of the core curriculum. However, each fellow is provided exposure to these advanced therapeutic procedures to enhance their understanding and readiness for future training or practice.
