Chief Resident (PGY-4)

Why did you select URMC for your residency? I loved the friendly atmosphere, and the extremely low cost of living. A quick drive through the Adirondack mountains sealed the deal for me. My fiancé and I ranked Rochester #1 and we are grateful that we did. I feel that the combination of high specimen volume, friendly training atmosphere, educational quality, and low cost of living can’t be matched by any other program in the country!

What is the best feature of your residency program? The people. The department is friendly, and the attending pathologists are heavily invested in resident education.

Hobbies and interests: Rock climbing, running, mountain biking, camping, hiking. I am a native Utahan, and grew up camping, climbing, hiking, and biking. I love the outdoors!

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? The food. There are so many great local restaurants with various cuisine types.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? I aspire to live near a lake, eliminate single use plastics from my day-to-day, and spend more time with trees and rain.

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here?  I wish that I had learned earlier to ask for help more often, and ask others how I can help more often.


Associate Chief Resident (PGY-3)

Michael Karasick, MD

Why did you select URMC for your residency? I was impressed as an applicant by the warmth and camaraderie of the residents and the hospital as a whole.  

What is the best feature of your residency program?  ​Everyone in the department is committed to fostering an environment that is friendly and welcoming.

Hobbies and interests: Reading, Fencing, Puzzles

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? There are many entertainment options around here, including concerts, festivals, and sporting events.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? I will be doing fellowship in transfusion medicine at New York Blood Center next year.

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here?​ Remember to keep an open mind as you go.

Anna-Karoline Israel, MD

Why did you select URMC for your residency? When I interviewed at URMC I just felt that I belong here. Faculty, staff and residents have a great relationship with each other and a lot of respect for each other. I had a small child going into residency and wanted to be in an environment where I felt supported in that regard. There is strong training in AP and CP and the curriculum gives a lot of room for elective rotations, exploring interests and shaping my future career.

What is the best feature of your residency program? The flexibility of the schedule with a lot of time for electives is a big asset. It truly helps to reach your personal career goals.

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? Rochester is a great city to raise a family. There are many great and unique stores, restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Rochester is close to the Adirondacks and Finger Lakes, which are great for little getaways in summer and winter alike.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? I want to be a head and neck pathologist in an academic environment.

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here? The interview and onboarding process really set me up for a good start and over time I realized that is truly great to be here.

Why did you select URMC for your residency?  I liked the people here the most of any of the places I interviewed and the program is strong in both AP and CP.

What is the best feature of your residency program? The leadership is willing to listen to the residents and work with us on changes to improve the program.

Hobbies and interests: My hobbies include reading, video games, and papercrafts

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? The snow (I like winter even if cleaning my car off is a pain) and some of the used bookstores in the city.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations?  Forensic pathology

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here?  Where everything was located in the hospital so I didn’t have to get lost when I started, but that just comes with time.

Why did you select URMC for your residency? During my residency interview, I fell in love with the beautiful city of Rochester and also the warm Pathology department.

What is the best feature of your residency program? There are so many beautiful features of this residency; it’s impossible to choose the “best.” We have a generous educational fund. The entire department and the chair are very supportive of one’s career goals. Faculty and staff are genuinely are friendly. I would say I hit the jackpot with this residency program.

Hobbies and interests: Family, hobbies: Reading; spending time with family; watching football (aka soccer)

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester?  No traffic jams for one! A lot of greenery/foliage. Safe.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? Academic pathology

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here? I had all the information I needed before I started residency.

Caroline Miller, MD

Medical School: Saint George's University

Why did you select URMC for your residency? I chose URMC because the culture of the department is excellent and everyone is warm, supportive and committed to teaching.

What is the best feature of your residency program? The best feature of our residency program are the people. Everyone, from attendings to support staff, are exceptional. We all work as a team to deliver the best patient care possible.

Hobbies and interests: My family consists of my fiancé, Shane, our cat, Crouton and our puppy, Pearl. My hobbies include spending time with my family, going for walks along the Erie Canal, reading and cross stitching.

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? My favorite thing about Rochester is that everything is convenient. There is never any traffic and you can get almost anywhere in 20 minutes or less.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? I am pursuing a Transfusion Medicine fellowship and hope to end up practicing in a blood center or academic setting. I enjoy teaching and hope to be able to do that in the future.

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here? I wish I knew how strong residency would make me and how much I would grow as a person.

Why did you select URMC for your residency?During the interview at URMC I  fell in love with the program and people, realizing that this is the place I want to be!

What is the best feature of your residency program? I see our program as a big family where everyone cares about each other. We are extremely friendly, supportive and loving and our cultural versatility makes it even more interesting and bounding. We meet to cook together etc., exploring each other's cultural background and just having a great time. We teach and elevate each other. I can talk forever about how great this program is!

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? Winter time!!! :)

Why did you select URMC for your residency? I chose URMC for my residency because of the program’s commitment to tailor educational experiences for each resident.

What is the best feature of your residency program?  Flexibility in curriculum

Hobbies and interests: I am here with my fiancée, Angelica, and my 110 pound dog Odin! When not working, I am either gardening, woodworking, or 3D printing some new gadget.

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? So many trails to explore!

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations?  I will be a Molecular Genetic Pathologist and Informatician, finding efficient ways to analyze the plentiful data that next-generation sequencing creates

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here? The importance of a quality snow shovel, a lesson learned the hard way.

Why did you select URMC for your residency? We wanted to be in Upstate NY and were impressed with the program

What is the best feature of your residency program? The best feature of the URMC residency program is that the structure of the program is set up with resident education as the first priority. The second best feature is the quality of the faculty.

Hobbies and interests: Cycling, backpacking, hiking, gardening, collecting and listening to records, playing video games, and reading comic books with my cat.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? I’d like to complete a fellowship and become an attending at URMC or at another hospital in Upstate NY. I’d also like to complete my ADK 46 and hike the Long Trail in Vermont.

What is the best feature of your residency program?  People and the supportive environment we create.

Hobbies and interests: My parents and my younger brother are back in Taiwan. I’m here with my hubby and our lovely cat, Momo.

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? Festivals and farmers markets.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? Wish to be a traveling pathologist or signing out cases at home (anywhere on the Earth…or Mars)

Why did you select URMC for your residency?
URMC is a well-known medical center with an excellent reputation for teaching and fantastic faculty team who are experts in multiple subspecialties in the US. Teaching and supportive culture is phenomenal. I am sure that I will get the best residency training here.

What is the best feature of your residency program? The supportive environment and dedicated supervisors.

Hobbies and interests:  Swim, cooking and traveling

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? Beautiful summer scenery and awesome grocery stores: Wegmans

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? My career goal is practicing in an academic setting as a clinical pathologist while conducting research as an investigator.

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here? I wish I knew how to keep a good balance of working and studying.

Why did you select URMC for your residency?
I believe that URMC provides excellent support, supervision and mentorship for its residents. The program has all the components of an outstanding residency training institution including diverse patient population and pathologies, research opportunities, state of art facilities and high caliber faculty devoted to training the residents.

What is the best feature of your residency program?
The best feature is the closeness of the family here at URMC. Everyone is willing to help at every point, starting from the day I got an invitation to interview here to now where am I settling down as a resident. You never walk alone, there is always people to help. 

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? 
So far I have enjoyed the diversity of food and restaurants around the Rochester area.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? Upon finishing residency, I would like to continue to strengthen my clinical and research skills with a Hematopathology and Molecular pathology fellowship. Ultimately I am interested in dividing my career between doing research and assuming clinical and teaching responsibilities.  I hope to combine my love of science with a commitment to teaching the next generation of physician scientists

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here? I am still pretty new so ask me again next year, I am sure I will have an answer. LOL

Why did you select URMC for your residency?I selected URMC for my training because of its prestige, broad array of fellowships and supportive leadership.

What is the best feature of your residency program? The best feature of my program is that it's not only a residency program. It's a family. Where every member supports each other and want their happiness.

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? What I love about Rochester is its summer, outdoor activity options and how everything is 10 minutes away.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations?  I want to become a successful pathologist and have the opportunity to teach pathology to others.

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here?  I feel like I knew everything I should before I started my training here.

Why did you select URMC for your residency?  Numerous reasons, including the warm and receptive welcoming by the faculty, residents and coordinators during interview season. Besides the program provides many opportunities to achieve my career goals I still be near my family! Yes I’ve been living in Rochester!

What is the best feature of your residency program?  The friendly environment

Hobbies and interests: Body pump classes, volleyball w/ my daughter, hanging out w/ friends!!

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester? Rochester is a hidden jewel! We find here everything from a big city without the traffic/ disadvantages of a large city.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? That’s difficult one! I have many of them! But at first to become a good pathologist and helpful to my community!

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here? How to find me better inside SMH. It's a huge hospital and many times I’m getting easily lost. :)

Why did you select URMC for your residency?  I chose URMC for my residency because I could tell how central the well-being of the residency program is to the department and I could appreciate the comradery between the residents on my interview day. Additionally, the location is conveniently close to my hometown.

Hobbies and interests: I live with my boyfriend, Jerry, and enjoy reading, arts and crafts, stand up paddle boarding, and playing with my pet rats.

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester?  So far my favorite thing about Rochester is the beautiful house and neighborhood I found to live in at a reasonable price.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations?  I have not yet identified a specific subspecialty to pursue, so my career options are still wide open. I do hope to be able to use some of my former training to assist in management and cost-making decisions for whichever type of organization I ultimately join.

One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here? I’m still pretty much at baseline in terms of things I’ve learned since I started residency.

What is the best feature of your residency program?
I think the best feature of my program is its support for its residents.

Hobbies and interests:
I enjoy outdoor activities like jogging or cycling. I like playing and watching chess. I am also a Linux enthusiast. 

What is your favorite thing(s) about Rochester?
My favorite part about Rochester is its outdoor activities and beautiful views. I'm new to the city so I still have a lot to explore.

Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? Wherever I end up, I want to become the best pathologist I can be.
