The Department of Radiology offers a four year, preceptor-type program.

PGY-2

Our first-year residents rotate through all the diagnostic radiology subspecialties, primarily in 4-week blocks. Weekend call does not start until the late Fall, under direct subspecialty faculty supervision. Residents participate in a comprehensive didactic course including virtual and on-site physics review.

PGY-3

Our dedicated quality improvement curriculum is set up for our second-year residents which includes both didactics and participation in a departmental QI project.

PGY-4

During the third year, residents again spend most of their training at the University of Rochester Medical Center, however select rotations are offered at University Medical Imaging, our primary outpatient facility. PGY-3 to PGY-5 cover the majority of in-house overnight work in a night float system. They have increased autonomy to match their growing skills.

Our residents participate in dedicated core exam reviews in the spring of this year. This includes participation in a national virtual physics review as well as collaborative regional board reviews with other residency programs in Western NY.

PGY-5

Our senior residents have a flexible schedule that allows for advanced training within different subspecialties. We promote a diverse educational experience; some of our residents have pursued international rotations, research electives, and ‘private practice’ rotations, working with our regional radiologists. Residents who pursue the American Board of Radiology Holman, Nuclear Medicine, or Pediatric Radiology pathways often complete a large percentage of their required time during this year.

Evaluation

Resident performance is regularly reviewed to ensure satisfactory progress. Informal feedback from attendings with respect to medical knowledge, reports, diagnostic and therapeutic imaging plans is given. Formal written evaluations are completed by attendings, fellows, and all residents at the completion of each rotation.

Each resident meets with program leadership at least semiannually to review performance.

Our residents participate in the annual American College of Radiology In-Service Examination as well as ACR RadExams.

Schedules

  1. Most rotations are between 8 AM to 5 PM, with breaks for scheduled didactics and/or lunch.
  2. Evening call shifts are from 4 PM to 10 PM, with subspecialty faculty direct supervision.
  3. Our “night float” shift is from 10 PM to 8 AM with direct attending supervision. One second-year and one senior resident work every night.

What our graduates say...

"As a level 1 trauma center with additional focuses in oncology, transplant care (including cardiac and liver), pediatric care, and even a dedicated institute for neuroscience I knew I would be able to see a wide breadth of pathology during my training here. I also knew the large catchment area of Upstate NY would provide the volume I needed to become proficient with even rare diseases."
