About the Program

Oversight of the program is managed by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, UR Medicine Labs. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (also referred to as UR Medicine Labs) is a division of the University of Rochester that provides clinical and anatomic laboratory services to providers and patients in the region, including but not limited to Strong Memorial Hospital and its affiliates.

UR Medicine Labs is the largest medical laboratory in the region with over 1,200 members, including 70 MD and PhD faculty (47 of whom are specific to anatomic pathology), 540 staff licensed to practice Clinical Laboratory Technology professions in New York State, and over 400 employees in pre-analytic operations and support roles. The department is made up of 28 clinical laboratories, 16 research laboratories, and five satellite laboratories for the Wilmot Cancer Center.

In addition, the department oversees several academic programs in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, including an advanced certificate program in Clinical/Medical Technology registered by New York State as licensure qualifying; a Residency Program; several ACGME-accredited and department post-residency fellowships; and a PhD program in Pathology. In the 2025 academic year, the anatomic pathology department processed over 360,000 surgical specimens, providing results for 116,000 patient cases. Since 2017, the laboratory has experienced a 43% increase in specimen numbers and a 27% increase in patient cases.

UR Medicine Labs occupies approximately 157,000 square feet of space, encompassing clinical and research laboratories, offices, conference rooms, and break rooms. This includes 29,000 square feet specifically designated for the surgical pathology laboratory, where program instruction takes place. The state-of-the-art surgical pathology facility, located at 211 Bailey Road in West Henrietta, NY, was constructed in 2024 with dedicated clinical education areas for this program and has been fully operational since November 2024.

UR Medicine Labs provides the personnel, faculty, lecture space, clinical training space, support personnel, finances, laboratory equipment, tools, and supplies necessary to support the program's mission.
