Tuition Refund Schedule

Refund of Payment Upon Withdrawal

Students who cancel admission, withdraw or take a leave from the University, voluntarily or involuntarily, before the first day of classes will receive a full tuition and fee refund (100%).

An enrolled student who withdraws or voluntarily takes a leave from the University on or after the first day of classes and through the seventh day of the term (first week), will receive a full tuition and fee refund (100%). An enrolled student who becomes inactive on or after the eighth day of the term but before the time when s/he will have completed 60 percent of the period of enrollment, will have their institutional charges and institutional aid adjusted based on a daily proration of attendance.

Refund Schedule for Fall 2023:

Prior to classes and from 8/30 to 9/5 100% reduction in tuition charges
From 9/6 to 11/4 Pro-rated refund based on days of attendance
After 11/4 There will be NO refund of tuition

Refund Schedule for Spring 2024:

Prior to classes and from 1/17 to 1/23 100% reduction in tuition charges
From 1/24 to 3/27 Pro-rated refund based on days of attendance
After 3/27 There will be NO refund of tuition


Tuition refunds for audits are not given once classes start.
Offices for Graduate and Postdoctoral Education defines the exact dates for each semester.

For tuition refunds when dropping a class while remaining enrolled:

  • 1-15 instructional days from the course section start date, students receive a 100% refund
  • 16-35 instructional days from the course section start date, students receive a 75% refund
  • 36-45 instructional days from the course section start date, students receive a 50% refund
  • 46-55 instructional days from the course section start date, students receive a 25% refund
  • After instructional day 55, from the course section start date, students receive a 0% refund

To Drop A Course

To drop a course, students must complete an Add/Drop Form, obtain the required signatures, and submit to Grad_Registrar@URMC.rochester.edu. The Add/Drop Form must be submitted within one week of the first day of attendance when adding a course, or within one week of the last day of attendance with dropping a course.  If submission is beyond the one week deadline, the date the form is received by SMD-GEPA will become the effective date unless approved by SMD Graduate Registrar.
