CEPH iconThe MPH at the University of Rochester is a 43-credit program accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health and has a long-standing tradition of training a diverse range of health professionals in the skills needed to develop and lead evidence‑driven public health solutions that improve population health. The MPH program includes didactic coursework, a practice-based experience, and a capstone experience.

Upon completion of the MPH program, students will be able to:

  • Transform evidence into public health action by applying quantitative and qualitative analytic methods to interpret data and guide real‑world decisions.
  • Improve population health through systems understanding by evaluating policies, structures, and community needs to design, manage, and assess effective public health solutions.
  • Lead collaborative change by communicating with different audiences and mobilizing partners across sectors to influence policy, programs, and population health outcomes.

Our MPH program takes advantage of our unique setting within a leading School of Medicine with its clinical research resources and collaborative faculty. Active faculty research programs encompass a range of areas, including behavioral interventions, environmental health, global health, health policy and outcomes, maternal and child health, medical decision making, nutrition, and aging. Our MPH program draws students from a wide mix of disciplines and backgrounds, who learn and grow in an academic environment that values all voices, pursues innovative scientific inquiry, and nurtures personal and professional development. Students completing the University of Rochester MPH program are well-prepared for professional careers across the spectrum of public health practice and research, encompassing medical and healthcare systems, private industry, government agencies, and non-profit agencies. Graduates are also well-positioned to direct their degree and professional experience toward future training in the health professions (e.g., MD, nursing), the DrPH, or a range of public-health-related PhD programs.

The University of Rochester, Department of Public Health Sciences will provide a 40% tuition scholarship to full time Master of Public Health students who register for and complete 9 or more credit hours per semester. A typical full-time student who registers for 12-13 credits per semester can usually complete the program in about 1.5 academic years (e.g., fall-spring-summer-fall).

The UR MPH Program is offered in two formats: online-only and online/on-campus hybrid. The MPH online-only format is delivered completely online and does not require any on-campus presence. The MPH online/on-campus hybrid format offers both options: it can be delivered completely online and does not require any on-campus presence, but it also enables additional in-person program elective options and additional options for the MPH’s capstone experience. Because both MPH program formats can be completed entirely online (i.e., there are no on-campus requirements in either format), international students are not eligible to obtain a visa for the MPH program of study, regardless of format.

Which MPH Program format is right for me?

The two formats available for our MPH program offer alternative paths, but the requirements and credits to complete the program are the same regardless of format.

  • Students who wish to complete their MPH program entirely online should consider applying to our MPH Online Program.
  • Students who are local to Rochester and might wish to take advantage of on-campus (i.e., in-person) elective courses and capstone options should consider applying to our MPH Online/On-Campus Hybrid Program format. Choosing the hybrid option does not require you to choose on-campus options; hybrid format students can still complete their program entirely online if they wish.
  • Because both MPH program formats can be completed entirely online, international students are not eligible to obtain a visa for the MPH program of study, regardless of format.
