A Message From the Director

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Neuroscience Graduate Program!Photo of J. Chris Holt, Ph.D.

The Neuroscience Graduate Program offers an outstanding opportunity for graduate training in an exceptionally interactive and collaborative environment at a world class research institution. Our mission is to prepare the next generation of creative, independent neuroscientists by providing academic instruction, research experience and active mentoring. Our faculty body is remarkably diverse, representing many departments and centers from the School of Medicine and the adjacent School of Arts, Sciences and Engineering. Faculty research interests span all major themes in contemporary neuroscience from cellular to systems and basic science to translational approaches, and utilize a gamut of state of the art techniques.

Extensive collaborations within and across these themes are a hallmark of the program, providing students the opportunity to design thesis projects without regard to traditional boundaries. Students are encouraged to become experts in their chosen subject while maintaining a strong general background in neuroscience through coursework and interactions with other program faculty and students. Students are also encouraged to build their professional portfolio by developing strong oral and written skills, attending career symposia, building scientific networks, traveling to present their work and interacting with our alumni and invited speakers. Students enter our program with diverse backgrounds and interests, but they share a passion for discovery and an intense curiosity about the workings of the nervous system. The Neuroscience Graduate Program builds on this passion by providing the state-of-the-art training students need to become successful neuroscientists.

Joining the Neuroscience Graduate Program at University of Rochester opens doors to numerous exciting and rewarding careers. Our alumni hold leadership positions in academia, medical and research institutes, industry, and scientific publishing among others. We welcome you to learn more about our program through this website and encourage you to contact us with any questions.
