How to Apply

Eligibility

Candidates should have completed a family medicine residency program before the fellowship begins, such that they are board-eligible or board-certified in family medicine. Candidates should plan to obtain a New York State License six months prior to starting the fellowship. We currently do not accept applications from physicians with H-1B, J1 Visas.  If you graduated from an International medical school, you will not be able to apply in the July cohort you will only be able to apply for the November start date because you have to have graduated 30 days prior to applying for the NYS Medical license and DEA certification.  

Application Process

To qualify for admission to the fellowship, candidates must:

  • Complete the online MCH Fellowship application no later than September 1st of the application year. Please use this online form to submit your application information through the RedCap Application link. 
  • Be sure to Indicate your
    • Intended track (Surgically-focused vs Advanced obstetrics)
    • Preferred Start Date Cohort (Cohort 1: July, Cohort 2: November)
  • Submit a CV including prior education and any clinical experience
  • Summarize the total procedure numbers of vaginal deliveries, and cesarean sections in primary and 1st assist role, and include these numbers in the online application using the link above 
  • Submit a copy of Procedure Log showing # of relevant procedures and total procedure numbers for vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections in primary and 1st assist role, other relevant procedures
  • Compose a personal statement, which should be one page or less. This should address
    • why you are interested in providing maternity and newborn care to rural/underserved communities as a family physician
    • what qualities make you a good candidate for this fellowship
    • your intended track (surgically-focused vs advanced obstetrics) and rationale/relevant experience for this 
    • your career goals and how the skills you seek to learn in this fellowship will contribute to your future practice
    • you may include any preferences or circumstances related to start date cohort, if desired
  • A professional photo of yourself 
  • Provide three (3) signed, reference letters, including one from the Program Director of your residency program or Department Chair. Include reference to your clinical abilities, professional qualifications, and moral character. These reference letters must be mailed from the writer or the organization's residency program official. Alternatively, a signed/scanned letter may be e-mailed by the writer or a residency program official to the Fellowship Coordinator.

Submit your completed online application (via RedCap) with the requested support documentation to the Fellowship Coordinator.

ALL Application documentation must be received prior to arranging an interview

Interview expenses are not covered by the Fellowship.

Selected applicants will be invited for an interview. The interview gives applicants a chance to meet many individuals who will be important in their training, and to see life in the Family Maternity Center (the labor floor) as well as the Rochester region. Fellows are chosen and notified on a rolling basis throughout the interview process. Start date is negotiated during interview and notification process.

Application Timeline/Dates to Note

Our fellowship is participating in the new national FMOB fellowship recruitment initiative, and as such will be following this standard timeline:

  • July 1, 2026: Application opening date
  • September 1, 2026: Closing date for receipt of fellowship applications
  • August - September: Timeframe to conduct interviews, all of which will be virtually via zoom 
  • September 30: Target date to finish interviews 
  • October 1, 2026: Target date to make our initial fellowship offers 
  • October 12, 2026: Date before which we will not require applicants with an offer from our program to respond (we will hold their spot for them until that date)
  • 72 Hours: Minimum time frame we will grant to applicants for a decision on any fellowship offer, before offering the spot to another applicant. (This includes any offers made after October 9, 2026)

    After recruitment season, our newly recruited fellows will pursue NY state medical licensure, and complete credentialing requirements and onboarding tasks starting in December until their start date the following year. 
    In addition, as a part of the new recruitment initiative, we ask that all applicants sign a statement agreeing to hold no more than 1 fellowship offer for more than 72 hours, and a statement agreeing to notify all programs at which they have interviewed when they accept a position elsewhere.  
    We believe this new recruitment initiative will make the FMOB fellowship recruitment process better for applicants, our program, and FMOB fellowship training in our country as a whole!
