Sheu Lecture

Shey-Shing Sheu lecture in Mitochondrial Physiology

Dr. Sheu received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1979, and came to the University of Rochester in 1983, where he stayed for 27 years. In 2002, he founded URMC’s Mitochondrial Research and Innovation Group (MRIG) as a multi-disciplinary program between the Departments of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology & Physiology. MRIG’s weekly meetings today involve almost 50 members spanning 8 Departments. Dr. Sheu’s seminal contributions to mitochondrial science encompass the relationship between mitochondrial calcium transport/signaling, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, energetics, and morphology in regulating cell function. Dr. Sheu has authored over 150 research papers (h-index of 64), is an inventor on 3 patents related to mitochondrial therapeutics, and has mentored dozens of trainees in mitochondrial science.  The Shey-Shing Sheu endowed lectureship in mitochondrial biology serves as a legacy to honor Shey’s foundational contributions toward mitochondrial science in Rochester.
