What will I be doing in the lab?
You will be gaining hands on experience as a research assistant for Project REACH. You will help with identifying and screening potential participants, conduct research appointments, assist with data cleaning, and more! You will be a valued member of the Sheftall Lab and collaborate with the whole research team.
What is Project REACH?
Project REACH is a randomized control trial evaluating two interventions for adolescent suicidal thoughts and behaviors - transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) to target emotion dysregulation, and a peer-support smartphone app to combat social isolation.
What is the time commitment?
We request RAs will make at least a two-semester commitment with our lab team. We also ask for a 10-15 hour per week commitment.
Do I get paid or received course credit?
This is a FOR-CREDIT position, we are not offering a paid position at this time. You can receive credit through an independent study, or independent honors study course.

Undergraduate Research Assistant - Family Risk Study

The Sheftall Lab is looking for volunteers for the Family Risk Study!
Students will help run research activities on a federally funded study, FAM RISK, examining early vulnerabilities to youth suicidal behaviors in high-risk samples of youth (e.g., 9–11-year-old with a parental history of suicidal behavior).
Responsibilities include:
- In-person or remote screening and recruitment of research subjects (15%)
- Administer behavioral questionnaires, interviews, and neurocognitive functioning tasks with the help of other lab personnel (35%)
- Perform routine research activities including data entry/cleaning, coding of family discussion videos, and maintenance of study forms (50%)
Requirements:
- Understanding of mental health and suicidal behaviors (can be limited but some knowledge expected)
- Non-judgmental personality, cheerful demeanor, reliable, timely, and consistent
- Problem solving skills, ability to work independently
- Some experience with Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, SPSS, BuildClinical preferred but can be learned on site
- CITI training preferred but can be accomplished on site
Compensation:
Students will NOT be paid for these positions. They will have the opportunity take independent study for credit (e.g., Psych 391 or 395) and at the end of the semester will be expected to write a brief reflection paper, 2 pages max, about their experience in the lab, their experience on the study, and how their experience has shaped their future outlook for their career.
Hours:
Students are expected to work 10 to 15 hours, which includes one night a week and possibly one Saturday a month to run research appointments.
