Clinical Photographs Collection

Introduction

This collection contains gross and micrographic images of pathological conditions taken of patients at Strong Memorial Hospital from the 1920s through the 1950s. Each photograph is labeled on the verso with the physician’s diagnosis, and often includes the patient’s name. Occasionally the name of the diagnosing physician is also included.

The terminology applied to each image reflects not only the diagnosing physician’s judgment, but also the terminology employed at the time. Some of the diagnoses and much of the nomenclature would be different today.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by disease entity. There is no index to patient names. Because patients often are identified, access to the Clinical Photographs Collection is restricted to professionals with a demonstrable research interest. The collection is contained in thirty-two negative boxes and occupies fifteen linear feet. Processing of the collection was completed in the spring of 2013.
