Schwannoma

What is a schwannoma?

Schwannomas are a benign peripheral tumor that form from the Schwann cells. Schwann cells are cells in the peripheral nervous system that produce the protective lining (sheath) of a nerve.

What causes a schwannoma?

Schwannomas are caused by a DNA mutation which causes Schwann cells to rapidly multiply.

Who is at risk for a schwannoma?

  • Personal or family history of neurofibromatosis-2 (NF-2)
  • Exposure to radiation

What are the symptoms of a schwannoma?

Depending on the nerve that the tumor is within, there is often pain in the affected area, weakness, and at times a palpable mass under the skin.

How is a schwannoma diagnosed?

  • Patient history
  • Physical exam
  • Imaging: ultrasound, MRI
  • Biopsy: a biopsy is the only definitive way to diagnose a tumor

How is a schwannoma treated?

Nonsurgical

Monitor with imaging

Surgical

If the tumor is causing symptoms, it can often be surgically removed.
