Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

What is tarsal tunnel syndrome?

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, however the nerve is being pinched near the ankle. The posterior tibial nerve runs through a tunnel of bone and ligament along the inside of the ankle, at times becoming entrapped within this tunnel.

What causes tarsal tunnel syndrome​?

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is most often caused by repeated pressure on the posterior tibial nerve that causes injury and inflammation of the nerve.

Who is at risk for tarsal tunnel syndrome​?

  • Those who have had injury/trauma to the ankle
  • Those with varicose veins
  • Being flat-footed

What are the symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome​?

Numbness, tingling, and/or radiating pain along the inside of the ankle and bottom of the foot.

Nonsurgical

Rest, ice, ​NSAIDs, immobilization, physical therapy, steroid injection, bracing

Surgical

Tarsal tunnel release is a procedure that removes ligament/other causes of compression to alleviate pressure on the posterior tibial nerve.
