I am a newly licensed Acute Care Nurse Practitioner working at URMC, a large tertiary care center, involved in postoperative management of thoracic and foregut surgery patients. Common patient population includes oncologic pulmonary resections, esophagectomies, and anti-reflux surgery patients. Prior to becoming licensed, I spent 8 months in an APP fellowship at URMC working in the thoracic outpatient clinic while being supervised by NPs and PAs. At this time I was responsible for seeing patients in clinic both pre and postoperatively, taking history and physicals, and discussing plan with corresponding attendings.
Prior to coming to URMC I worked for 5 years as an RN in the Surgical/Neurological ICU at Rochester General Hospital. The unit consisted of patients who had undergone various general surgeries, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, foregut and colorectal surgery. The unit also houses neurology, trauma, and obstetric patients. While in SICU I was a charge nurse, on the code team, stroke team, and trauma team. I was required to float to various units of similar specialty; including CTICU and MICU. I was also a preceptor to new hire staff nurses and collegiate student nurses.
Prior to my ICU experience I spent a total of 3 years working on two different medical/surgical floors; one of which being the unit of my current employment. Patients consisted of thoracic, plastic, burn, trauma surgery, colorectal surgery, and general medicine patients.
