I grew up in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. My undergraduate education was at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) in Biochemistry. I also completed Masters in Physiology at University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) before going to medical school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville. The rest of my medical training was at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where I learned from great mentors during my residency in Internal Medicine and fellowships in Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology. I then joined Geisinger Health Systems in Danville, PA where I was a transplant hepatologist for 6 years. In addition, I oversaw the GI fellowship there as the associate program director. Although I have a variety of clinical and research interests, caring for patients with advanced liver disease because of viral hepatitis, screening for and preventing complications like hepatocellular carcinoma, and providing comprehensive care for those who need liver transplant, have always been my passion. I also have strong interests in global health and have enjoyed academic collaborations across specialties and borders.
