Dr. Paulo Lizano is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and neuroscientist who is dedicated to understanding and treating serious mental illnesses, especially those that begin early in life—like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other conditions involving psychosis. He believes in combining the latest science with compassionate, whole person care to help people live fuller, healthier lives.

At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Dr. Lizano led the ASPIRE Clinic, a program he helped build to support young adults experiencing early signs of psychosis. There, he and his team provide personalized treatment while also offering patients the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research. His approach blends medical care with innovation, aiming to detect and treat mental illness as early—and as effectively—as possible.

Dr. Lizano is also a scientist. In his research, he studies how vision, the brain barrier system, inflammation, and neural circuits changes in the brain may play a role in psychiatric conditions. He uses brain scans, eye imaging, blood tests, neuromodulation, human stem cells, and other tools to better understand how these illnesses develop and how to treat them. He is especially interested in how early warning signs in the body can predict changes in thinking, emotions, or behavior—long before full symptoms appear.

A strong believer in collaboration, Dr. Lizano works with scientists, students, and healthcare providers to push the boundaries of what’s possible in psychiatry. He teaches at URMC and mentors future doctors and researchers, helping shape the next generation of leaders in mental health care.

At the heart of Dr. Lizano’s work is a simple, powerful idea: by combining science, compassion, and early intervention, we can improve lives—and change the future of mental health.

Dr. Lizano is a neuropsychiatrist and physician-scientist whose research focuses on unraveling the mechanistic underpinnings related to psychotic disorders. He is the Academic Chief of the Community Division at URMC and he leads a multidisciplinary translational neuroscience laboratory.

Research Focus
Microvascular and inflammatory biomarkers: Dr. Lizano has led pioneering efforts identifying vascular signatures—such as anti-angiogenic markers like sFlt-1 and VEGF polymorphisms—that predict gray matter loss, evolving psychopathology, and cognitive outcomes in schizophrenia and bipolar II depression.

Multimodal imaging and retinal oculomics: Combining retinal imaging, neuroimaging, and blood-based biomarkers, his lab aims to develop diagnostic and prognostic indicators for early-course psychosis.

Neuromodulation interventions: Dr. Lizano explores targeted noninvasive brain stimulation—such as tDCS and HD-tES—applied to brain regions linked to hallucinations, including the visual cortex and superior temporal sulcus.

Impact & Recognition
Published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, with a strong focus on psychotic disorders, retinal biomarkers, neurovascular pathology, and neuromodulation.

Recognized for receiving funding from major institutions including the NIMH, Burroughs Wellcome Fund, OneMind, Harvard Catalyst, and others.

Clinical and Mentorship Activities
Was the founder and clinical director of the BIDMC ASPIRE Clinic, an early psychosis intervention program offering integrated patient care and research participation for individuals aged ~19–45 with recent onset psychosis.

Heads the Lizano Translational Neuroscience Lab, which trains students and fellows in translational neuroscience applications and fosters projects across retinal and brain imaging, biomarkers, human iPSC models of disease, and neuromodulation.

Dr. Paulo Lizano is a leading figure in translational neuropsychiatry, blending rigorous imaging, molecular biomarkers, and neuromodulation to better understand and treat psychosis. His work especially emphasizes early detection and intervention in serious mental illness, with the goal of building clinically actionable tools for diagnosis and therapy.

At URMC, we believe that patients should be empowered to make the right decisions regarding their personal healthcare. To do so, transparency is critical. URMC partners with Press Ganey, to survey our patients about all aspects of their care experience. We are now putting this pertinent information at your fingertips by displaying star ratings for our providers along with anonymous patient comments on our website. This will help you make better-informed choices about how and with whom you seek care. Click here to learn more about the surveys used to generate this vital information.
