Dr. Anthony Pietropaoli was born and raised in Rochester, NY. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross ith a B.A. degree, majoring in English & Pre-medical studies. He attended Upstate Medical University and then moved to Pittsburgh for internship, residency, and chief residency in Internal Medicine. Dr. Pietropaoli spent two years practicing General Internal Medicine before making the decision to specialize in Pulmonary & Critic al Care Medicine. He completed this fellowship at the University of Rochester in 1999, joining the faculty thereafter. He has served a number of roles in the division and medical center, currently directing the Medical Intensive Care Unit, the Respiratory Therapy Department, and the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. His clinical interests broad, but he spends most of his clinical time on all things critical care, pleural disease, and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Dr. Pietropaoli developed and leads a critical care translational research program at the University of Rochester. During this time we have enrolled over 500 critically ill patients and volunteers in our cohort studies, made new observations about the relationships between NO metabolism, red blood cell dysfunction, neutrophil dysfunction, vascular function, and clinical outcomes, and forged strong collaborations with clinical and basic science investigators across a number of university departments.

Dr. Pietropaoli also collaborates with investigators in laboratory and transfusion medicine investigating the "storage lesion" that develops in banked blood and clinical outcomes in critically ill transfusion recipients.

Dr. Pietropaoli also investigates the epidemiology of critical care medicine. He is the UR principal investigator for the Critical Illness Outcomes Study, a nationwide cohort study involving over 6,000 patients in 69 U.S. ICUs designed to examine relationships between patient characteristics, ICU characteristics, and mortality

Dr. Pietropaoli's long-term goal is to nurture the growth and productivity of this comprehensive, multidisciplinary critical care research program, promoting new discoveries that improve outcomes for our critically ill population.

Ratings & Reviews

At URMC, we believe that patients should be empowered to make the right decisions regarding their personal healthcare. To do so, transparency is critical. URMC partners with Press Ganey, to survey our patients about all aspects of their care experience. We are now putting this pertinent information at your fingertips by displaying star ratings for our providers along with anonymous patient comments on our website. This will help you make better-informed choices about how and with whom you seek care. Click here to learn more about the surveys used to generate this vital information.
