Susan Hulse has been a physician assistant in the field of HIV medicine since 1996. She started at Albany Medical College and worked in California at University of California, Davis where she coordinated the NIH AIDS Clinical Trial Unit.

Since 2004, she has worked with the University of Rochester’s AIDS Treatment Center as a physician assistant. Susan has a special interest in women with HIV and prevention of maternal-fetal HIV transmission.

In 2021 she returned to clinical research and took over as the site coordinator for the University of Rochester's NIH AIDS Clinical Trial Unit.

Susan has been a Physician Assistant in the field of HIV medicine since 1996. She was a New York State Department of Health Primary Care Service Corps Honor and first started in the field in HIV at the Albany Medical Center’s (AMC) Division of HIV medicine.

She worked for Albany Medical Center’s (AMC) Division of HIV Medicine from 1996-2000 where she was involved with industry sponsored research protocols in addition to maintaining a large clinical practice of individuals living with HIV. She helped to implement the treatment of PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) patients following sexual assault when it was initially recommended by New York state.

In 2000 she relocated to the University of California, Davis she initially worked at the CARES clinic and oversaw the women’s clinic caring for women living with HIV in the Sacramento area. For a short period of time, she worked in Houston at the Dr. Joseph Gathe, MD/ Donald R. Watkins Memorial Foundation. In addition to caring for persons living with HIV, she used her clinical research experience to enroll participants in HIV naïve clinical trials as well as providing an internal audit for research records.

When she returned to UCD, she coordinated HIV treatment, HIV vaccine and Hepatitis C clinical trials. When UCD was granted the NIH grant to be an ACTG (AIDS Clinical Trials Group) site, she became the CRS (Clinical Research Site) Coordinator for the ACTU (AIDS Clinical Trials Unit) and oversaw the day to day functions of the research unit as well as being able to participate as a sub-investigator. She was able to continue to work in the HIV clinic at the CARES clinic a few days per week and was a member of the Sacramento County Perinatal HIV Program Community Advisory Group.

In 2004 she returned to full time clinical practice and began working at the University of Rochester Medical Center. During this time, she maintained a large practice of persons living with HIV. She specializes in women with HIV and coordinates with the special care clinic and pediatrics to assist with preventing maternal-fetal transmission. She has also worked closely with the emergency room to assure close follow up of those individuals who required PEP after sexual exposure.

She was the chair of the Rochester Area Task Force on AIDS (RATFA) Mortality committee where they collected information on the mortality in individuals living with HIV/AIDS in the Finger Lakes region from 2004-2007 in order to report back to the community on our findings. The project identified that there were significant co-morbidities found in the population of those living with HIV/AIDS which contributed to their death.

As a Clinician in the AIDS Center at URMC, she has assisted with the clinic's medical home application, system implementation and renewal process. She is a super-user for the EMRs used at URMC, initially Allscripts then later Epic's eRecord. She assists with the creation of templates utilized by the Infectious Diseases Unit and is certified as an Epic Physician Builder. She has assisted in improving clinic processes as well as a key eRecord resource to the division.

In early 2021, she returned to full time clinical research as the CRS Coordinator for the ACTU at the University of Rochester as well as maintaining a small clinical practice in the HIV clinic. She brings over 25+ years of clinical trial and patient care experience to her role.
