Biography

Professional Background

I am a Pediatric Urologist doing clinical care, research and teaching with particular interests in Disorders of Sexual Differentiation, Transgender Surgery and Medical Ethics.

I attended Princeton University and received my medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. My surgical residency was at the University of Vermont and urology residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. I went to the United Kingdom for pediatric urology fellowship at the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool and the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and Institute of Urology, London.

My first faculty position was at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where I rose to Professor. I then joined faculty at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and remained for 25 years serving as Urologist-in-Chief for the last nine. I returned to the University of Rochester Medical Center in 2021.

I have held several leadership roles in pediatric urology including presidencies of both the Society for Pediatric Urology and the American Association of Pediatric Urologists.

My interest in Disorders of Sexual Differentiation has been longstanding (I have authored the definitive chapter in the last four editions of Campbell-Walsh’s textbook of Urology) and related to my work in medical ethics, which began with a fellowship in Biomedical Ethics at Harvard Medical School in 2001. I served as Clinical Ethicist and member of the Ethics Advisory Council at Boston Children’s Hospital beginning in 2002. In 2007 I became Co-Director of the Gender Management Service (GeMS) at Children’s Hospital and in 2017 Co-Director of the Gender Surgery Center, the first transgender surgical program based at a children’s hospital in the US.

At URMC, we believe that patients should be empowered to make the right decisions regarding their personal healthcare. To do so, transparency is critical. URMC partners with Press Ganey, to survey our patients about all aspects of their care experience. We are now putting this pertinent information at your fingertips by displaying star ratings for our providers along with anonymous patient comments on our website. This will help you make better-informed choices about how and with whom you seek care. Click here to learn more about the surveys used to generate this vital information.
