Physical activity remains a very important part of your recovery. Initially, you may notice that you tire easily. Remember, it takes time to rebuild your strength and endurance. Begin by performing the exercises you did in the hospital. Gradually increase the frequency, intensity, and duration of activity or exercises.

Other important guidelines for exercising include:

  • Plan time to rest throughout your day.
  • Avoid vigorous activities that cause extreme fatigue and require great physical stamina until your red cell and platelet count are stable.
  • Do not participate in activities where you could fall or be injured (snowmobile and motorcycle riding, rollerblading, and so forth).
  • Swimming is permitted in chlorinated pools, not ponds, lakes, streams, or oceans, if you are least 60 days post-transplant. Your tunneled central venous catheter site should be covered prior to swimming, and you should clean and cover it with a new dressing after swimming.
  • If you have any questions concerning exercise, activity, or require guidance regarding energy conservation, speak with your nurse coordinator, nurse practitioner, or physician.
  • Returning to work depends on your post-transplant health and your ability to perform your work activities. Discuss your return to work with your nurse coordinator, nurse practitioner, or physician.
