Cardiac Imaging
What is Cardiac Imaging?
If your doctor suspects you have heart disease, the first step to treatment is often cardiac imaging—and there are many different types. Cardiologists use imaging to help diagnose heart disease, and then determine the most appropriate treatment for you.
UR Medicine's Approach
UR Medicine Cardiac Care offers the widest range of cardiac imaging services in the Rochester region, including:
- Arteriograms – A scan that uses X-rays, contrast, or dye to see inside the arteries.
- Angiograms – A scan that uses X-rays, computed tomography angiography (CTA) or magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) to show the blood flow through the arteries or veins.
- Cardiac Catheterization – A minimally invasive procedure that takes moving pictures of your heart and the surrounding blood vessels.
- Cardiac Mapping – An electrophysiology study that maps the electrical activity of the heart.
- Cardiac MRI – A non-invasive test that images your heart with magnets. No X-ray exposure is involved.
- Carotid Ultrasound/Duplex – Also called a Doppler, a non-invasive test that measures the blood flow through the carotid arteries using soundwaves.
- Echocardiograms – A non-invasive test that shows blood flow through the heart using soundwaves.
- Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) – A special kind of MRI that examines blood vessels.
- Multigated Acquisition Scan (MUGA) – A non-invasive test that shows how the heart is pumping blood.
- Nuclear Cardiology Tests – A stress test that shows how well blood is flowing in the heart.
- Transesophageal Ultrasound – A test that takes images of the heart using a probe through the esophagus.
Your UR Medicine healthcare provider may request several different tests.
