Application Deadlines

Our next opening for university-affiliated internships with Nazareth University will be between April 15 to June 17, 2026. Applications will be accepted between November 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026. Top candidates will be invited for an interview no earlier than February 15, 2026. Interviews will be held in late February to mid-March 2026. Typically, two interns are selected per start date.

Application Requirements

Submit the online application. Required materials include:

  • Current resume, including education, clinical training and relevant work or volunteer experiences.
  • Official academic transcript(s) from all universities attended.
  • Essay of which answers the following questions (four double-spaced pages max):
    • Describe your interest in medical music therapy and this site in particular.
    • Give a brief statement of your theoretical orientation as a music therapist.
    • Describe your musical background, strengths, and opportunities for growth.
    • Describe your therapeutic skills, strengths, and opportunities for growth.
    • Describe your goals and expectations for this clinical internship.
  • Two different clinical writing samples that demonstrate your documentation skills – can be any of the following: Assessment, Care Plan, Session Plan, Session Note, or Progress Review.
    • Note: Sample writing is NOT permitted to have any names or specific identifiers outside of diagnosis, age, and gender. Please use a fictional letter (i.e., “Client/Patient R”) when referencing.
  • Application videos with the following requirements:
    • Sing two different songs you think would be relevant to this population, accompanying yourself on the keyboard for one and guitar on the other. After you play the song, briefly share what lyrics, musical, and/or cultural traits could inspire discussion related to treatment goals in this population.
    • Prepare a video of a described songwriting case example or simulated songwriting intervention (please include simulated patient) – maximum of 5 minutes.
    • Videos must display both your face and your fingers.
    • Upload the videos to YouTube (mark as unlisted, not private) or similar cloud-based service, and provide a link to the videos.
  • Letter of Eligibility from your Academic Director AND at least 2 letters of reference from other professors or practicum supervisors (please arrange for the writers to email these directly to the Internship Director).

Applicant Evaluation Process

Applicants will be evaluated using the following process:

  • Full application review
  • On-site interview with Music Therapy team for selected applicants
    • Online accommodations can be made for out-of-town applicants
  • Live audition on voice, guitar, and piano

Internship Acceptance Process

If accepted, additional requirements and processes are implemented:

  • A legal affiliation agreement between your academic institution and URMC will need to be signed AND proof of liability insurance must be sent by the academic institution to the Internship Director. Official acceptance is contingent upon this agreement/proof and it MUST be initiated immediately following an offer.
  • Evidence of health insurance on file with your academic institution.
  • Will need documentation that intern meets required vaccination/immunization status, including:
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination – flu vaccine is not required, however unvaccinated healthcare workers will need to mask at all times while onsite during flu season
    • COVID-19 vaccine or declination – COVID vaccine is no longer required, however, URMC is required to collect data on visiting students related to COVID vaccine status
    • Annual Health Assessment with primary care physician or student health
    • MMR 1 & 2 vaccines
    • Varicella 1 & 2, positive titer, or documentation of illness
    • PPD or IGRA test within 1 year of clinical experience

Additional Information

The internship pays a stipend of $5000 (half distributed at 3 months, second half distributed at 6 months). You may also receive up to $500 toward continuing education (i.e., conference attendance), to be used during the internship. A parking permit will also be covered by the internship program.
