Our gastroenterology fellows benefit from a busy, academic teaching hospital balanced with a reasonable call-schedule which allows us to maintain an active social life. There is no shortage of challenging cases as well as general gastroenterology at Strong. We have a variety of teaching conferences, including GI-Surgery, M&M, journal clubs, pathology, board review and interesting case conferences.
There is a real sense of camaraderie among the fellows and attendings which lends itself to a friendly, supportive learning environment. We get together after hours for barbeques, Super Bowl parties and dinner or drinks at one of the many local bars and restaurants.
Rochester is an affordable, family-friendly, medium-sized city along the Genesee River, Lake Ontario and the Erie Canal. Commuting is easy and the public school systems are among the nation’s best. Known as the “Festival City,” there are outdoor festivals nearly every weekend from spring to fall. There are a variety of cultural offerings from jazz and film festivals to museums and touring Broadway shows. Our Public Market was recently named America’s favorite large farmer’s market. Home to several minor league professional sports teams including the Rochester Red Wings AAA baseball team and the Rochester Rhinos soccer team, the Buffalo Bills and Toronto Blue Jays are a day-trip away. There are plenty of activities for outdoor enthusiasts including biking along the Erie Canal, hiking in nearby Letchworth State Park or visiting the Finger Lakes and touring vineyards. Niagara Falls is only 90 minute away by car and Toronto is a 3-hour drive.
